Choosing Art for Your Home: Peter Staunton’s Guide

Art can completely change the feeling of a room. But how do you choose the right piece?

For Peter Staunton, the starting point is simple: choose something you love.

“Art should create a reaction,” says Peter. “It might remind you of somewhere you've been, something you've experienced, or simply make you feel something when you see it.”

Consider the space

The right artwork needs to work with the architecture and proportions of a room. Scale is particularly important — a large wall may need a bold statement piece, while a smaller space could benefit from something more understated.

Look beyond paintings

Artwork doesn't have to mean a painting. Sculpture, photography, textiles and decorative objects can all add character to a home.

The key is creating a collection that feels personal rather than overly coordinated.

Peter will be sharing his expertise on BBC’s The Big Deal with Steph McGovern, where he joins the judging panel for Episode 2.

For Peter, the best interiors aren't simply decorated — they tell a story.
